Back-to-Black on a Ducati 999

Back-to-Black on a Ducati 999

Why does my black motorcycle look so greyish black instead of a full dark black?

- Micro-scratches (swirls) and contamination stop light from filtering through, which makes your paint look less fresh and less dark.

How can I solve this?

- The best thing is to start by washing and claying your bike, before considering polishing the paint.

How and why does this help?

- By claying the surface you remove all contaminants, which ensures that light can enter and exit the paint layers without effort. Grime and contamination from the road build up on the upper layer of your paint, together with oxidation from contact with the air. Regular washing won't remove these, so you need to resort to claying in order to clear the paint.
A clear layer of paint lets light filter through without issue, which ensures that black is reflected as a deep, dark black. If the light filters through contamination it loses intensity, which makes the reflection less vivid, and the frequency is altered, which makes black look grayish.

At the Superbike day, by Ducati Club The Netherlands, a Ducati 999 rider asked us if we had any advise on how to make his 999 a vivid black again, instead of the grayish layer that his bike had. He hadn't heard of claying yet, so we gave a demo on his bike. The bike was clayed with Chemical Guys blue clay and Clay Luber, followed by a fresh layer of Collinite Insulator Wax.
